How Does Sleep Get To Work?

Updated: Sep 16, 2024

Our existence has been so beautifully curated with precision and we are in sync with the natural world.

At sunrise, the entire world comes alive. The birds start chirping, plants start stretching open to catch the light and most creatures get busy working.

At sunset, everything starts to slow down, it becomes quiet and hibernation for majority of creatures start when it becomes dark.

When one looks at the phenomenal science behind how our brains function, you realize how perfectly we have been designed to function with the natural order of things around us.

Our bodies heal at twice the rate when we are asleep. This is a time for cleaning, packing away the days work, putting everything back in its right place so that when the new day begins, everything is clean, in order and ready to flow and function just as it should.

Metabolism is the rate at which the body runs which is controlled by the Thyroid.

Your body goes into Catabolism in the day (breaking down) and Anabolism at night (building up).

Diet plays an important role as the hormones released from the Pineal Gland are all made up of the food we eat.

Your Pineal Gland requires:

·    Amino Acids (Neurotransmitters)

·        Minerals (Glue us together)

·        Fats (Oil in the engine for brain function)

Can you see here why protein, mineral rich soil to organically grown food and fat are essential to your diet?

See my post on balanced eating which explains more:

Your brain is a Hydroelectric system which needs water to function.

Your Glymphatic system (cleaner) is strongest in the early evening and has the ability to break down the tiniest buildup of Amyloid Plaque.

Amyloid Plaque (like calcified deposits) builds up in the frontal lobe/pre frontal cortex of the brain where your decision making, reasoning, judgement and intellect take place. This build up has been linked to Dementia and Alzheimer’s.

There are some brilliant minded people who have boasted 5 hours of sleep a night being efficient, however in their last years suffered from severe dementia, take Margaret Thatcher for example.

You need rest and you need enough of it. We have been created to function this way, a cycle of work and rest, it is part of our very special design.

8 hours has been proven to be the sweet spot as your Non-Rapid Eye Movement time (NREM) phases out into your Rapid Eye Movement time (REM)

NREM

·    Your deepest stage of sleep

· Your days memories move from short term memory to long term memory

·  Your glymphatic system is the most active, cleaning

REM

·    You are more likely to wake during these hours, less of a deep sleep state

· Time when your brain is sorting, filing and consolidating the days data

·  Dreaming stage

·  When inventive ideas are sparked

It takes about 5 x 96 minute phases = 8 hours for your brain to fully work though all of the moving, sorting, consolidating and cleaning which has a "side effect" of extraordinarily bizarre yet very real feeling dreams. It's a combination of storing your most recent updated knowledge mixed with new available space (blank canvas) for idea building onto the already existing data you now hold. Your mind is open for more.

Some 8 hour slot estimates to reap the best benefits of your sleeping pattern:

·        8pm – 4am

·        9pm – 5am

·        10pm – 6am (at a stretch in Summer)

Can you see why the early bird catches the worm?

Can you see why you are better off going to bed earlier rather than later?

When you go to sleep very late at night, you are missing out on sleeps peak performing time! Its very purpose. Which means you are not starting the day off on the wrong foot, but more like a few steps behind which its impossible to catch up on.

So what about people who work night shift? They must sleep during the day so that they can be awake at night.

Did you know that working nightshift has a similar effect on the body as drug addiction and alcoholism? That is physiologically. Are you aware that if you are not well rested, you are not considered sober minded? Which is obvious when you think about it, because you cant function normally when your tired. You are there but things don't quite fire right or at your best which should be normal. Just like you cant function normally when you are intoxicated.

So what can you do if you cant get out of night shift? Someone has to do it.

If you are able to, try and work less of the late shifts, as least as you possibly can.

Adjust your sleeping times to get enough sunlight into your eyes and make sure you work in an exercise session, preferably before your shift starts so that you will be more up to sleeping when you knock off but if you can only do it before you sleep, your body will thank you for what it has access to. Even if you just go for a walk outside without your sunnies to fully access your eye, before you hit the job and/or the day sack.

Side note - Sunlight's ultraviolet rays travel through your eye to neurochemical pathways that hit the pineal gland. This helps you get better sleep and your pineal gland releases serotonin which helps you sleep better. But more on this in the future for another topic.

So when the sun sets and the natural world starts to shut down, your cleaning switch is turned on.

You lay in your bed and drift off with an empty belly so that your body is able to direct all of its energy to cleaning the household, including the kitchen, so that the next morning when you wake up, every room is readily waiting to be embraced to its fullest potential.

For those struggling to sleep at night or have issues like restless legs, shaking, muscle cramps, spasms, stiffness, you should incorporate Magnesium into your evening regime.

There are many options, but I just want to mention that through your skin or orally in a liquid form are the most readily available to your system and fastest absorbing forms, skin being number 1 as it goes directly into your blood stream via your skin.

I make a body spray which you can conveniently and easily use right after your shower or bath which is fast absorbable and has a calming effect on the body. It also has added MSM to help target any joint, muscle or arthritic pain. https://www.hubofhumble.com/product-page/magnesium-oil-msm-body-spray

You can also try our Organic Turmeric, Ginger and Cayenne capsules to help with inflammation in the joints which specifically targets arthritis and helps stimulate blood flow.
